Metals and Oxygen:

Metals and Oxygen:

Aim: To make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product compared to the reactants.

Equipment: A piece of magnesium, busen burner, safety glasses, metal scissor tongs.

Method:
1. light your Bunsen burner.
2. hold your piece of magnesium in the scissor tongs. Ensure you are holding onto the very tip of the magnesium.
3. Place the other end of the magnesium into the Bunsen flame (At the top of the blue flame.
4. When the magnesium begins to burn,do not look directly at it, as the light emitted can permanently damage your eyes.

Observation: Once we put the metal on fire it made a bright light because of the reaction of oxygen hitting the magnesium.

Discussion: We basically put magnesium into the blue flame, once we saw it was on fire we took it out of the flame and with the reaction of oxygen that hit onto the magnesium it make a bright white light. That was way to bright for anyone to actually look at, we did this many times just because it looks really cool.

Conclusion: Basically we saw the reaction magnesium had when oxygen hit it once being on fire.

English:Hunger Games Scenes

Brainstorm

What Happening- Reaping scene - 2 tributes selected to compete in the Hunger Games
-Best dressed

Describe Costumes- Light colors, neutral tones, old fashioned, simple
formal/Sunday best
Boys-  dress shirt,pants or shorts
Girls-  Hair tidy, dresses or skirts.
Colors- cold,clean,faded- washed and warn a lot.
-Older clothes mended

Effect on viewer- Think they poor because clothes are outdated.
- peacekeepers/effie in new clean outfits.
- think it is a bad living- emotionless, all the colour has been drained.

Directors Purpose- show the comparison/juxtaposed of the district + the capitol.
- shows theme "Rich vs Poor" because district doesn't have access to resources with new clothing.

Other Technique- Make-up- style=status, effies eye lashes are long + pink and her face is white. "The district has no make-up access or need for it.

(S) In the reaping scene, costume is used effectively to show the theme "Rich vs Poor". For example, the potential tributes are dressed in formal shorts, shirts and trousers. (E) Their clothes are well-warm, weathered and dull. (X) This makes us understand how the people in district 12 are poor because their best clothes are old and faded compared to the capitol Representative Effie Trinket. (X) This is done to show juxtaposed between the extreme wealth of the capitol and the poverty of those in district 12. (X) This worked with with the use of make-up is shown by Effie. She has lots of make-up on including long pink eyelashes, an extremely white foundation and pink and gold lips. This tells the viewers that she is wealthy because she can afford extravagant make-up when those in the district can barely afford clothes. This aspect can be compared to the scene when the tributes arrived off the train in the capitol. Here we see luxury and excess wealth in the costumes of the capitol citizens compared to the rags warn by Peeta and Katniss

What happening- In the capitol, Katniss and Peeta just getting off the train, Has never been there before.

Describe Costumes- Bright,colorful,neon,extravagant,vibrant,oversize
- look expensive and more fancy then casual.
- Over the top- excessive, more than needed to be practical
-   head pieces to match,wigs
- both genders over the top outfits/wigs/make-up

Effects on viewer- thinks they are rich/greed- have more than us
- think/feel -fashion is shocking/scary to viewer-in your face
-shows us how shocked/different things are for Katniss+Peeta

Directors Purpose- Again shows us theme "Rich vs Poor"- the people in capitol live in extreme ways compared to the poverty of district 12.
- people in the capitol have everything
Make-up- over the top- caked on so we know they have lots of it- Men and Women are both wearing it.

Setting- Concrete,metal,glass,crisp,futuristic,clean,technologically advance

Whats happening- In the arena of the Hunger Games

Describe Costumes- Practical- suitable for fighting
-Jackets,boots,shirts,long pants.
- colors that will match the surroundings and help them hide
- tells us about the climate in the arena
- not going far as not much

Effect on Viewer-  Feels like they are directed for war/hunting- all dressed same uniform
- All look same-everyone has the same advantage
- makes us less emotionally attached to individuals

Directors Purpose-
- "Rich vs Poor'- Everyone is finally equal so personal skills become important.
- "Struggle and Power' - Tributes are under the power of the Capitol, they have no freedom/free will at this point.

Freytag Pyramid: Hunger Games

Freytag Pyramid: Hunger Games

What am I learning: To show that I can identify plots in movies which in this case was the Hunger Games.

How does this show my learning: It shows my learning because I was able to create an freytag pyramid which it was my first time doing and making it in a why that is pretty easy to understand.

What am I wondering: If there are any plots that may have made a better and more important effect in the movie that I haven't put.

Art:

Art: Printing
For art we have been making a carving to then ink onto a piece of paper. Our objective was to make a final print of our drawing in that case I made a bird. It took be a few weeks to finally get the drawing I liked then I traced it onto my carving lino. After putting it onto my carving lino I finally was at the point of actually carving it out. With our prints we did lightest colour first to then end on our darkest colour. for my first colour which was yellow I just cut out the out line of my bird for the next colour green I cut out all the parts I wanted to keep yellow. Finally to the last colour black I cut out all the pieces I wanted to keep green. I think I did well for it being my first time doing multiple colors but next time I would definitely do a different image that I could draw better and also line up the the lines better when printing.

Metals and Acids:

Metals and Acids:

Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Equipment: A test tube, a boiling, Bunsen burner, wooden splint,a bottle of acid,a piece of metal, safety glasses.

Method:
1. Light you Bunsen burner
2. Add you sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2ml of acid.
3. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid (as shown in the diagram below).
4. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with glass
5. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint.
6. Carefully, but quickly, tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Result: When gas was formed we quickly put the wooden splint that was on fire into the test tube which mad a loud popping noise.

Discussion: Basically we put Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid in one test tube and put another bigger test tube over it which started to make a gas form. As Magnesium and Hydrocloric acid were mixed together they formed bubbles and started to get hot. When the hydrogen gas was in contact with oxygen it made a big pop noise.

Conclusion: The experiment was really fun I really enjoyed it and loved to see everyone get scared with the popping noise. It would be fun to do this experiment again but next time I would like to put the splint in the test tube.

Hunger Games Important Settings:

Hunger Games Important Settings:

What am I learning?
I am learning to be able to identify important settings in films and also explain why they are important.

How does this show my learning?
It shows my learning because I was able to put pictures of each setting and explain why they were so important. Like why it helps the film, I was also able to also say whats happens in each setting listed. So it shows my learning because I was able to put information/reasons why its important down in a way that is easy to explain for others and in a layout that is easy to read.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
If there were any other settings that are important that aren't listed. Because I feel like I could of added a few more setting but I wasn't which ones to add.

Question 4 link:

Question 5 link:

Question 6 link:

What went well and why:
What went well was how many websites that had the information required were available for me. All the information was easy for me to understand and reword to put in my poster.

What didn't go so well and why?
That hard bit was I wasn't able to find a person's story that I could use in the poster. I tried looking for a refugees story but I was unsuccessful.

If you were to do this again what would you do differently and why?
I think I would pick a different country so I am able to get a refugees story since I had trouble with finding a Syrian one.

Science: Making salt

Science: Making salt
Aim: To produce chloride salt by carrying out a neutralisation reaction.

Equipment:                                                                                                 *Not ours*
Core practical - Salts - Edexcel - GCSE Chemistry (Single Science ...
  • Copper Oxide Powder
  • Dilute Sulfuric acid, 50mL
  • Measuring Cylinder
  • Two 100 mL beakers
  • Bunsen burner
  • Tripod
  • Gauze mat
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper
  •  Thermometer
  • Spatula
  • Evaporating Bunsen
  • Stirring rod

Method
- Add 20mL of sulfuric acid to a 100Ml beaker. Heat the acid until it reaches 70 degrees. Turn off you Bunsen.

- Once heated, use a spatula to add pea sized portions of copper oxide to the beaker. Stir the mixture for 30 seconds

- Repeat the step ahead until no more dissolves. Allow the beaker to cool.

- Fold the filter paper and place it in the funnel. PLace the filter funnel into the second beaker.

- Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hold at the top. The contents should still be hot.

- Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix, and then pour into the filter paper in the funnel. Allow to filter through.

- Rinse the beaker you used to heat the mixture previously, and place it back on top of your tripod filled with 50-60 mL of water

-Place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solution from the beaker into the evaporating basin.

-Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin had reduced by half.

- Leave the evaporating basin to cool. Once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm place where it will not be disturbed and observe over the next few days. Blue copper sulfate crystals should form.

Observation:
The copper oxide was a black powder once putting it in copper oxide into the sulfuric acid it changed colors into a nice blue.

Result:
At the end of the experiment it didn't work to well there were only a few crystals around the side and one in the middle. I did this experiment last year and I feel like I did it better than.

Discussion:
This experiment was fun but I feel like it would of done better if I took my time. My group kind just rushed it and it didn't turn out to well. Last year I was able to get more crystals and they looked cleaner and better.

Conclusion:
The experiment was pretty fun we got to see crystals form but I think it would of been better taking our time. Apart from the I love the chemical reaction that happen, Its pretty fascinating to see. Its also a lot of fun to do as well.
